We had an email come in recently from a new RVer, Kurt B., who outlined his secret fears during his purchasing process. He mentioned the general “nerves” that come with making a large purchase, but that’s not what we found so interesting. His most interesting RV purchasing “fears” were related to the fact that the RVs he was most interested in buying were consignment RVs.

Why did that increase Kurt’s fear of the purchase? It was mostly because he didn’t understand what consignment meant or what it meant for him specifically. Here’s an excerpt from his email:

“I couldn’t be sure and I should have looked into it before I let my imagination run away with me, but for some reason I decided that the simple addition of the word consignment meant a lot of confusion. I let the idea that it wasn’t ‘good for me’ snowball into a major prejudice against the entire concept. It gave me that same feeling that I was involved in a land purchase without a real estate agent and the seller has one, or that I was involved in a court case with no legal representation.”

This is an extreme case of prejudice against the concept of RV consignment. Kurt did eventually calm down and make his purchase on a consignment basis, but we felt that many might have the same irrational fears as he did simply because he didn’t understand the concept of consignment. So let’s talk about it.

There are consignment retail shops dotting every major city. They are simply a place where individual owners of items of varying values can bring their items for sale. They leave them in the retail setting until the right buyer finds them and makes a purchase. The consignment shop owner handles the sale in a professional manner and receives a portion of the purchase price in exchange.

It’s not scary. Many of us have purchased shoes, furniture, clothing, home décor and more from just such a consignment shop without even noting the special process. It’s really no different when you are making the larger purchase of a recreational vehicle. It’s a retail outlet that is offering you access to a lot of RVs that have come from individual owners at a fair price. Don’t let the term “consignment” make you nervous. It’s not as intimidating as you might imagine. It’s actually not intimidating at all!
