If you’re ready to roll on your next great RV vacation, here are some favorite scenic routes to get you started:
Los Caminos Antiguos Scenic and Historic Byway
Distance Each Way: 129 miles
Driving Time: Three hours
Starting Point: Cumbres Pass
Ending Point: Alamosa
Route Description: The gorgeous Los Caminos Antiguos Scenic and Historic Byway runs through the San Luis Valley, which suddenly rises up into the beautiful, richly-forested San Juan Mountain range.
Sights To See: The Los Caminos route includes two famous parks, the Great Sand Dunes National Park and Preserve and the San Luis State Park. The route also runs along the historic Cumbres and Toltec Scenic Railway. You’ll want to stop at San Luis, where you can visit the Stations of the Cross Shrine, and you should also take time to visit the picturesque town of Alamosa.
Santa Fe Trail Scenic and Historic Byway
Distance Each Way: 188 miles
Driving Time: Four hours
Starting Point: Trinidad
Ending Point: Lamar
Route Description: As one of the first major routes of the American West, the Santa Fe Trail originally covered 900 miles from Missouri to New Mexico. As you drive your recreational vehicle through the prairie land of Colorado, you’ll be able to see the original wagon ruts left by settlers traveling by wagon train more than 150 years ago. You’ll also see plenty of wildlife on your RV vacation, including pronghorn, an antelope-like animal that has the distinction of being the fastest-running land mammal in the entire western hemisphere.
Sights To See: Don’t miss a visit to the several locations in historic Trinidad in your consignment RV, including the Trinidad Lake State Park. You’ll also want to see Fort Carson, a historic military installation, as well as the towns of La Junta, Rocky Ford, Las Animas and Lamar. It’s also worthwhile to visit John Martin Reservoir State Park and Bent’s Old Fort National Historic Site, which features an authentically recreated 1840s adobe fur trading post.
Dinosaur Diamond Scenic and Historic Byway
Distance One Way (Colorado section): 134 miles
Driving Time: Four hours
Starting Point: Grand Junction
Ending Point: Dinosaur
Route Description: The famous Dinosaur Diamond route runs though the Western Slope of Colorado, an area deep in mesa country that’s rich in purple sage and lush vineyards. At the north of the route lies Dinosaur National Monument, where, in recent years, enthusiasts have discovered incredible fossil finds. As you drive your recreational vehicle along the route, you’ll see plenty of rafters and kayakers enjoying the rivers that run along the edge of the highway. In the southern part just outside of Fruita, you can take a side trip to the Colorado National Monument and enjoy the scenic bluffs and breathtaking spires made of sandstone.
Sights To See: Take time to stop in the towns of Grand Junction, Fruita and Dinosaur, where you can visit the local welcome centers and learn more about the history of the area. You’ll also want to visit the Colorado National Monument, the Dinosaur National Monument and Highline Lake State Park, as well as the beautiful Canyon Pintado.
Trail of the Ancients Scenic and Historic Byway
Distance: 114 miles
Driving Time: Three hours
Beginning Point: Colorado border
Ending Point: Utah border
Route Description: This route features an amazing landscape of mesas, hills and buttes surrounded by spires of red sandstone and accented by dark juniper pines. You’ll be able to see the haunting view of the San Juan Mountains ahead in the distance as you drive your recreational vehicle past the seemingly endless canyons and sandstone spires.
Sights To See: You’ll want to visit the historic towns of Cortez and Delores, and you’ll definitely want to see Mesa Verde National Park, the Anasazi Heritage Center and the Canyons of the Ancients National Monument.
