RV Consignment Lots and FSBOs are Not Always Best
June 4, 2013 8:04 amRV Consignment lots, For Sale By Owner, or trading in at a new dealer are just a few ways to sell an RV. Selling a motorhome is no small undertaking. It is a large item, and it must be marketed to a specific crowd. There are a few steps that should be taken if you decide to market and sell your RV by yourself, and be aware that there are costs associated with getting the word out that you are looking for a buyer, and preparing your RV to go on display.
Get the word out that you are selling your RV: There are several ways to let people know that you have an RV for sale. It never hurts to spread the word amongst friends and family. The Internet plays a big role, as there are many sites devoted to those who are selling items. However, you must keep in mind that the entire world sees these ads. Some of the people calling about your motorhome may be completely legitimate, some may just be “lookers,” and there are those who are professional con artists that prey on people selling big ticket items. In any case, be prepared to do a lot of phone answering. Should anything come of the ad, then be prepared to know exactly how to properly sell the RV and how to handle all the paperwork, payoffs, etc. You can always park it on a street corner with For Sale signs hanging prominently. This is risky, however, as there is no security. Vandals tend to have their way with unguarded motorhomes, and that could turn into a very costly repair bill. Also, to respond to the corner every time someone calls and wants to meet you there can be very time consuming, and many times it is for nothing, as they are gone by the time you get there, or they don’t show up at all.
Get the motorhome in show ready condition: A motorhome that is to be looked at by potential buyers must be in tip-top condition, whether you’re placing it on a consignment lot or on the open market. In order for it to compete with all the other RVs out there for sale, the exterior and the interior must be in good repair. This may require a thorough cleaning and sanitizing within, as well as paint repair, wash and wax on the exterior. Any dents in the body or bumpers should be repaired as well. There may be windows that are cracked or chipped that require replacement. All of the on-board equipment must be in proper working order, and the tires should be in decent shape. This can be very costly, as these repairs are not inexpensive. If you have smoked in your RV, or if you have kept pets inside, you may have a bigger challenge to get it smelling nice and clean. It may behoove you to have the upholstery and the carpets cleaned.
Consignment RV sales and For Sale by Owner attempts can be successful, but your RV must be in good condition before it gets on the lot. If you sell it yourself, there is a great deal of marketing and paperwork before you can officially call it “sold.” If you choose a consignment lot, there are fees and charges that take away from the bottom line.
There is another option when it comes to selling your RV that is effective and quick. You could call SellMyRVToday.com and tell them you are selling an RV (2002 or newer), anywhere in the continental U.S. or Canada. They are professional RV buyers and this is what they do day in and day out. They don’t even have to see the RV to make an offer to you. They will make a fair offer, and if you accept, they will deliver certified funds to your doorstep and take the unit away. This usually takes less than three days. It is incredibly fast and very simple, and you don’t have any of the hassles that come along with the other methods of selling your RV.
