Sell My RV Online – To Whom It May Concern
October 8, 2011 2:05 pmTo Whom It May Concern:
I made a valiant attempt to sell my RV online and it went terribly wrong. I must admit on the front end that I did not use you guys, but I really wish I would have now. My aunt works for Sellmyrvtoday.com, and I really should have paid more attention to her when she told me how your RV consignment sales program worked, but hindsight is 20/20.
I live in San Diego. This past summer I decided to sell my 2007 Four Winds Majestic. It was a pretty small class C RV, and I know that it was not worth a fortune, but I need all the cash I can get these days.
I thought I’d price my RV for sale at $15,000 and work my way down from there. I was not going to go any less than 13K for it, because I had just gotten a tune up on it, had a new fuel pump installed and put new tires on it. It had low mileage and was in pretty sweet condition.
Two days after I decided to sell my RV online, I got a call from a guy who told me that he was looking for that exact model, and could I hold onto it for him until he arrived that evening. He sounded pretty serious, but I wasn’t going to forfeit a deal if someone else came along. Nobody did though, so I still had it by that evening.
The guy told me that he would have been here sooner, but that he was at a groundbreaking ceremony for a playground that was being built on a piece of land in Oceanside that he donated to them. I was pretty impressed. The guy seemed to be very wealthy. Not only did he show up in what looked like a chauffer driven Lincoln Town Car, he was dressed in very expensive clothing. The first thing he did was flash me a smile with his veneered teeth and hand me his business card. Oh, and the most beautiful blonde I have ever laid eyes on got out of the car as well … also dressed to the nines!
When I showed him my RV for sale, he said that he was looking for something a camp counselor could stay in comfortably. He said he sponsored a camp for underprivileged youth near Lake Tahoe. I saw dollar signs flashing before my eyes and told him that this would be perfect for him. He said that we could probably do business because he needed the unit by week’s end and since it was already Friday, he would take it. He asked that since it was for charity, if perhaps I could lower my price by a thousand dollars. I said I would (I would have gone down $2000)! He wrote me a check and handed it to me. The name on the check matched the name on the business card. He said he understood if I wanted to wait until the check cleared before signing the title over, but I could tell just by looking at him that the check was good. I signed over the title. The limo driver left and this guy and girl got in and drove the RV away.
That evening I went to the bank and deposited the check in the night deposit. I was so glad I had decided to sell my RV online. I think I was just trying to keep anyone else from getting a piece of the pie … total greed, actually. I then went out with a bunch of buddies and picked up the tab at the restaurant … I was money ahead anyway! I really wish the story ended there. It was three days later I got a call from the bank security people telling me that the account that the check was written on was not a valid account, and that the check was worthless. I called the police and made a report, but the officer shook his head and told me that most likely it had already crossed the border and was already sold. Needless to say, the name of the guy was not real either.
I guess the purpose of writing this letter is to let you know that there are snakes out there, just waiting to take advantage of people. I know that there are good people too, but be very careful.
I spoke to my aunt, and found out how awesome your RV consignment sales program is. I only wish that I not been so greedy, and had used you in the first place.
Sincerely,
Completely Broke in San Diego (too ashamed to use real name)!
